Every year around this time, one of our teachers, Michelle, detoxes for a whole month. I talked to her about the process, and she told me the key is taking it in stages. It’s much harder to stick to something when you drastically change your habits all at once. Michelle starts with 2 weeks without gluten, dairy, or alcohol. Then on the 3rd week, she cuts back on coffee. In the 4th week, she fully detoxes from coffee and caffeine, processed food, and sugar. On the last day of the month, she’ll finish strong with a 1 day juice cleanse. Doesn’t this sounds SO much more doable?!
You probably break a sweat during your yoga flows, and other ways you like to exercise, but I’m talking a deep detoxifying sweat from a steam room or sauna! If you’re having trouble shaking the season cold or allergies, step into the steam room at your local gym (many 24 hour fitness have them), breathe deeply, and get your sweat on!
We recently posted about infrared saunas, and I can’t recommend that experience enough for a good detoxifying sweat. Here’s what I wrote about Purify Sauna Lounge in Anaheim Hills.
Everyone there was very helpful in explaining how it works, what to wear (or not wear, I should say), and all the benefits.
You can spend quite awhile in the sauna, up to 40 minutes, since the heat is from an infrared light. I only lasted about 30 minutes, but still felt the full effects. I mostly did some seated yoga, but you can also play music, read, or even watch TV! It’s important to bring water or buy a bottle there. It’s a totally private sauna so you can be nude or wear a swim suit.
I don’t know if this is how you’re supposed to feel, but I felt energized and refreshed after sweating that much. I seriously felt so happy and got so much done the rest of the day. Add this to your self-spring cleaning list FOR SURE.
Spend some time outside in nature without your phone. Make a day of it! Go to the beach, go one a hike, just explore technology free. Let us know what you observed and perhaps learn from this experience!
First of all, if you are struggling with this topic, you are not alone. Sharing or acknowledging failures or flaws is a beautiful thing that reminds us WE ARE HUMAN. Where is the line dividing selfishness and self love? How do you know if you love yourself? Self love directly relates to pure, independent happiness; knowing that who you are is enough, and forgiving yourself for imperfections. You are beautifully unique. There is literally not another you - HOW COOL IS THAT?!
Self love is the fuel for positivity and motivation in every day life. It helps to deepen connections with other people and better express love toward others. When you make time for yourself, you're given the opportunity to remember and acknowledge why you do the things you do—why you work so hard, and sacrifice for those you love.
If you need a little more self love in your life, start by doing what makes you happy. Even if it’s just one little thing per day, bringing that feeling of joy into your life, and knowing you did that for yourself, will undoubtedly create a snowball effect of finding joy all around and within you. If you need a little more guidance in this whole department, we’ve got your back. Here are some activities you can do for yourself that we think will make you feel well, happy, and loved.
Take care of yourself
The way you fuel your body to take you through an entire day can have a tremendous effect on your mood. Fuel is food, thoughts, activities, or anything that gets you through the day. Make a plan for your day - what makes this day a success to you? Planning ahead to move your body, accomplish necessary tasks, and cook yourself a healthy meal will not only properly fuel your body, but also give you the mental boost for cultivating some self love and appreciation.
Moving your body is always a positivity boost go-to. Yoga allows your to connect with your body, helping to develop a deep appreciation and respect for your strength, and all you are capable of doing.
Lastly, get off of social media, at least for a little while. Self-love is so important with the culture we live in today. Everything is about keeping up with and comparing oneself to others these days, and sometimes we need to take a step back from that. Staying balanced and focused on what’s really important will put up a wall (the good kind of wall) to block the negative thoughts that social media tends to ensue.
Have some fun
Perhaps your self care routines are also where you find fun, but I’m talking thrilling, heart-racing, FUN. When was the last time you belly-laughed till you cried, got lost in an amazing song singing at the top of your lungs, or got out of town to tap into nature? Find what makes you happy, on all ends of the spectrum, and let yourself go there.
We talk about mindset a lot. I've been obsessed with this topic lately, because I had my own personal "ah-ha" moment with mindset control. Meditation, yoga, you time, whatever it is to you, carving out time to tune in and and connect with what's going on in your mind and body WILL give you the strength to combat negativity.
When you start your day taking control of how you want to think and feel, that decision stays with you throughout the day. Just like in meditation, if you lose track of that intention, pull yourself back to it when you can. It is certainly a practice, so be patient with the process, but remember that you are in control.
